Costco is famous for its no-questions-asked return policy, but how many returns are too many before they draw the line? The answer is a bit more complicated than you might think.
While Costco won’t cancel your membership or kick you out for making frequent returns, they will keep an eye on patterns, especially when it comes to expensive items like electronics. If you’re the type to return a new TV every 87 days to avoid paying for it outright, Costco could put a block on your future returns. Your membership remains intact, but your return privileges may take a hit if it seems like you’re abusing the system.
For example, someone once returned a playground set they bought in 2008, claiming, “My kids grew up.” Costco refunded him $1,400, no questions asked, but it’s safe to assume they’re keeping a close watch on any future returns from that customer! Interestingly, the same manager who shared this story also addressed the question, “Will Costco really kick you out for too many returns?”

Costco employees track return patterns and will flag accounts with frequent or questionable returns. Next time you bring something back, they might take a closer look to ensure everything checks out. However, if your return is legitimate, polite, and maybe even a little remorseful (like when your new sweater doesn’t fit), Costco will likely work with you.
Costco’s return policy is incredibly generous, but don’t abuse it. If you repeatedly return big-ticket items, you might end up on their watch list. As long as your returns are reasonable and honest, Costco’s doors—and their famous $1.50 hotdog combo—will remain open to you!
