How to Cook Perfect Rice Without a Rice Cooker (Asian Style)

Cooking rice without a rice cooker might sound tricky, but it’s actually easy with a simple trick used by many across Asia. All you need is a pot, water, and your finger! Yes, your finger is the magic tool for getting the right water-to-rice ratio.

​Here’s how you do it:

  • Rinse the rice – Give your rice a good wash (Uncle Roger would approve). Rubbing the grains together helps remove excess starch.
  • Measure water using your finger – Even out the rice in the pot, then place your finger on top of the rice. Add water until it reaches halfway up your first knuckle.
  • Cook on medium-high heat – Cover the pot and try not to peek! The steam does the magic here.
  • Turn the heat to low – When the water is mostly absorbed, turn the heat down and cook for another 10 minutes.

And there you have it—perfect, fluffy rice!
